"Theresia Colliery", what a sonorous name. But first "Zeche Nachtigall" - I'm delighted! That doesn't fit in at all with the hard, dirty miner's business. But imagination and inventive spirit really took hold here. Railroad pioneer Friedrich Harkort himself built the Muttenthalbahn to transport coal with trolleys. I've heard that it's one of the oldest and most important mine railroads of all - isn't it, Alfred?

Muttenthalbahn - Full steam ahead on the Ruhr (2002)

Brief description (film without sound)

Witten-Bommern is the home of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Muttenthalbahn e.V., which has set itself the goal of restoring disused mine and light railroads.

Here you can see a special trip on the approx. 650 m long line.

The Muttenthalbahn yesterday and today

  • Steinhausen Manor with Theresia Colliery [approx. 1860]

  • The mine and light railway museum is located below Steinhausen Castle, shown here on a historical postcard.

  • You can see some historic buildings of Theresia colliery: on the left the locomotive shed that was heavily damaged by the storm in July 2021, on the right the Café Theresia and on the bottom right the "service building" of the Muttenthalbahn e.V. association.

  • Departure of the passenger train at the platform at Theresia colliery. The train travels in the direction of the Zeche Nachtigall.
